Frequently asked questions
The questions Central Ohio homeowners ask us most, answered without the sales pitch.
Is the water test really free?
Yes. It is free, it takes about twenty minutes, and it does not obligate you to buy anything. We test at your kitchen sink, write down what we find, and leave the results with you.
What does non-electric actually mean?
It means the softener is not plugged in. There is no timer, no circuit board and no display. It is operated by the pressure of the water moving through it.
The practical result is that a power outage does not affect it, and there is no electronics failure waiting in its future.
Why two tanks instead of one?
A softener has to stop and clean itself periodically. A single-tank system goes out of service while it does that, which is why timer softeners are set to regenerate in the middle of the night.
A twin-tank Kinetico keeps one tank in service while the other regenerates, so soft water is available at every hour, and a full house does not run you out of capacity.
What does regenerating on volume mean?
The system counts the gallons that pass through it and cleans itself when the measured capacity is used up, rather than at a set time on a set day.
A timer softener regenerates on the calendar whether the house used forty gallons or four hundred. Counting gallons avoids both the waste and the shortfall.
Where is the equipment made?
Kinetico builds it in Newbury, Ohio, roughly two and a half hours northeast of Columbus.
How much salt will I go through?
It depends on how hard your water is and how much your household uses, both of which the test measures. Because the system regenerates on volume rather than on a timer, it is not spending salt on weeks when nobody was home.
Do I need a softener, a drinking water system, or both?
A softener treats the whole house and is aimed at hardness. A drinking water system lives under the kitchen sink and is aimed at taste and at what is dissolved in it.
Many homes want both, plenty start with one. The test tells us which will do more at your address.
How long does an installation take?
Most residential installations are finished inside a morning, and our own installers do the work. We start the system up, clean up, and walk you through where the salt goes before we leave.
Will you work on a softener that is not a Kinetico?
Yes. We service every brand. If something you already own has stopped keeping up, call us. The answer is often a service call rather than a replacement.
We are on a private well. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Much of Central Ohio outside the city is on wells. Well water more often brings iron along with hardness, one of the things the test looks for.
How often do the drinking water cartridges get changed?
On a set interval that depends on the system and how much water the household draws. The K5 cartridges twist out and twist back in by hand, with no tools and no shutting the water off.
What areas do you cover?
Columbus and Central Ohio, including Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard, Powell, Gahanna, Grove City, Reynoldsburg, Delaware and Plain City. If you are not sure, call and ask.
Will somebody try to sell me something at the kitchen table?
No. We test the water, explain the results, and tell you what we would install if it were our house. There is nothing to sign and no reason to decide that evening.
Still wondering?
Call (614) 555-0100 and ask. You will get a person here in Central Ohio, not a menu. If the answer depends on what is in your water, we will say so.
Or read through the common water problems, the softeners we install, and how a visit and an install go.
The shortest answer is usually a water test.
About twenty minutes at your kitchen sink, free, with the results written down and left with you. Then the questions stop being hypothetical.
