At the kitchen sink
A softener and a drinking water system do two different jobs.
A softener takes care of the whole house: the showers, the laundry, the water heater, the appliances. It is aimed at hardness. A drinking water system is aimed at taste and at what is dissolved in the water you actually drink, and it lives under one sink.
Plenty of Central Ohio homes want both. Plenty start with one and add the other later. Either order is fine, and the water test tells us which one will make the bigger difference first in your house.

How reverse osmosis works, briefly
Water is pushed against a membrane with openings so small that water molecules pass through and a great many dissolved things do not. What makes it through is collected in a small tank under the cabinet, and that is what comes out of the extra faucet. Prefilters ahead of the membrane catch sediment and chlorine taste so the membrane is not doing all the work by itself.
It is a slow, quiet process, which is why there is a holding tank. You are not waiting on it. You turn the handle and it is there.
What people notice first
Coffee and tea. Almost every time. Whatever a coffee maker is doing to the beans, the water is most of what ends up in the cup, and people tell us the difference is obvious on the first pot. After that it is ice that comes out clear instead of cloudy, soup stock that tastes like the ingredients, and pasta water that does not add anything of its own.
The other thing that goes away is the bottled water routine. No more hauling cases in from the car, no more crate of empties by the back door, no more running out on a Sunday.
Filter changes and service
Cartridges get replaced on a schedule, and the K5 is built so you can do it yourself in a couple of minutes. Twist out, twist in, no shutting off the water and no wrench. If you would rather we handle it, we do that too, and we will keep track of the interval for you so you are not the one remembering.
