Why well water is different from city water

Columbus city water is treated by Columbus Municipal Utilities, tested frequently, and regulated under the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act. If a problem develops in the city supply, the municipality is legally required to notify customers and address it.

Private well water works differently. Groundwater drawn from a private well is not regulated at the federal level. It is not routinely tested by any government agency. The Ohio Department of Health recommends annual testing, but it is not mandatory, and there is no monitoring system that alerts you when your well water quality changes.

You are the person responsible for the quality and safety of your well water. If there is bacteria in your well, no one will tell you. If your iron level spikes, no one will notify you. Changes in surrounding land use, septic system issues, drought, flooding, and normal geological variation can all affect your well water quality, sometimes dramatically, without any visible sign at the tap.

Central Ohio's geology adds specific challenges. The aquifers under Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, and Pickaway counties contain significant concentrations of dissolved minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium (hardness), iron, manganese, and in some areas hydrogen sulfide and naturally occurring arsenic.

What to Watch For

Common well water problems in Central Ohio

Most Central Ohio well owners deal with multiple problems simultaneously. A comprehensive water test identifies all of them.

High Hardness

Well water in Central Ohio commonly tests at 15 to 30+ grains per gallon, significantly harder than already-hard Columbus city water. Some deep wells in Delaware and Licking counties test above 40 gpg. This extreme hardness causes rapid scale buildup in pipes, accelerates water heater failure, ruins appliances, and is expensive to ignore.

Iron and Manganese

Iron above 0.3 mg/L causes orange staining on everything it contacts. Manganese above 0.05 mg/L causes black or brownish staining and is a health concern at higher levels in drinking water. Hydrogen Sulfide

The rotten egg or sulfur smell in well water comes from hydrogen sulfide gas produced by sulfur-reducing bacteria in anaerobic aquifer conditions. This is more common in deeper wells and in areas with certain rock formations. Even at low concentrations the smell is unpleasant and can make showers and cooking water smell terrible. Bacteria and Coliform

Total coliform bacteria and E. coli are the most serious well water concerns because they indicate fecal contamination and potential health risk. Sources include septic systems, agricultural runoff, surface water infiltration, and aging well casings. You cannot see, smell, or taste bacterial contamination. Annual testing is the only way to know. Homes near septic systems, animal facilities, or older wells are at higher risk.

Sediment and Turbidity

Sand, silt, and grit in well water cause accelerated wear on pumps, valves, and fixtures. Turbid (cloudy) water from a well is a sign of surface water infiltration or a deteriorating well casing, which also increases the risk of bacterial contamination. A sediment filter is the first line of defense and protects every other piece of treatment equipment installed downstream.

Nitrates

Nitrates in well water come primarily from agricultural fertilizers and septic system leachate. Central Ohio is agricultural country, and nitrate contamination in private wells is a documented problem, particularly in rural areas of Franklin, Pickaway, and Fairfield counties. Nitrates at levels above 10 mg/L are dangerous for infants and should be treated with reverse osmosis. Well water near farms or older septic systems should always be tested for nitrates.

How It Works

A typical Central Ohio well water treatment system

Most well water treatment systems in our area are multi-stage. Each stage addresses a specific problem and protects the stages that come after it. Here is the order and logic.

Sediment Filter

Installed at the point where water enters the home, the sediment filter captures sand, grit, silt, and particulate matter before it reaches any other equipment. This is critical because sediment damages pumps, clogs filter media in downstream equipment, and can carry bacteria. Without a sediment filter, every other system in the treatment train works harder and wears out faster.

Iron and Sulfur Filter

Installed after the sediment filter, a specialty iron and manganese filter removes dissolved and particulate iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. This happens before the water softener so that iron cannot foul the softener resin. This is a non-electric, backwashing media filter that requires no added chemicals to operate. It handles the most challenging contaminants in Central Ohio well water.

Water Softener

With iron and sediment removed, a water softener handles the hardness using ion exchange. At the hardness levels common in Central Ohio well water, a properly sized softener protects all appliances, eliminates scale buildup, and delivers the household and cleaning benefits that come from soft water. UV Disinfection

Ultraviolet disinfection is the final whole-house safety stage. UV light at the right wavelength destroys bacteria, viruses, and protozoa by disrupting their DNA, preventing them from reproducing. Unlike chemical disinfection with chlorine, UV adds nothing to the water and creates no disinfection byproducts. For any well water source where bacteria is a concern, and in Central Ohio that includes most wells, UV disinfection is the right approach.

Common questions from Central Ohio well owners

The Ohio Department of Health recommends testing private well water at least once per year, at minimum for bacteria (total coliform and E. coli). Annual testing is important because well water quality can change without any visible sign, due to seasonal variation, changes in surrounding land use, septic system changes, weather events, or gradual changes in the aquifer. Well water near agricultural land or septic systems should be tested more frequently. If you have never tested your well water, start with a comprehensive test that covers all the major parameters. That depends entirely on what is in your specific well water, which is why testing is the only honest answer to this question. Some Ohio private wells produce water that is safe to drink without treatment, though it may still have hardness and aesthetic issues. Many others contain iron, manganese, hardness, or bacteria at levels that create problems ranging from serious aesthetic issues to genuine health concerns. Without a test, you cannot know which situation you are in. Most Central Ohio well owners who have their water tested for the first time find at least one parameter above recommended levels. The responsible approach is to test first, then treat based on what the test shows.

High hardness and iron are by far the most common well water problems in Central Ohio, and they frequently occur together. The limestone-rich geology of central Ohio produces groundwater that is naturally very high in calcium and magnesium (hardness) and often contains significant dissolved iron and manganese. It is not unusual to see well water tests from this area showing hardness above 25 to 30 grains per gallon and iron above 2 to 3 mg/L, which is 7 to 10 times the EPA's aesthetic guideline. Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) is the third most common issue, particularly in deeper aquifer wells. Bacteria testing reveals contamination in a meaningful percentage of wells in the area, which is why it should always be part of any well water test panel.

Kinetico's water softeners and iron/sulfur filters are non-electric. They operate entirely on the kinetic energy of moving water, with no timer, no circuit board, and no need for a power connection. This is a significant advantage for rural well owners who may experience power outages during storms, since the water treatment system continues working unaffected. The UV disinfection system does require electricity to power the UV lamp, since that is a fundamentally electrical technology. The K5 drinking water system is also non-electric except for any optional monitoring features. For most well water treatment systems in Central Ohio, only the UV component requires power.

Yes. Separation distance between a private well and a septic system is regulated in Ohio, with minimum distances set by county health departments, typically 50 to 100 feet depending on soil type and system design. But separation distance is a minimum standard, not a guarantee. Older properties may not meet current separation requirements. High water tables, certain soil types, and flooding can all allow bacteria to travel farther than expected. Any well within 200 feet of a septic system should be tested annually for bacteria. If your test comes back positive for coliform or E. coli, do not drink the water until the source of contamination is identified and the well is treated and retested. UV disinfection is the most effective, lowest-maintenance permanent solution for wells with ongoing bacteria risk.
