Iron in water comes in two forms, and understanding which form you have determines the right treatment. Ferrous iron is completely dissolved. It is invisible and colorless, so you cannot detect it by looking at your water in a glass. When that dissolved iron contacts oxygen, in the air or on a hot surface, it oxidizes into iron oxide, which is rust, and creates the orange and brown stains on tubs, toilets, and sinks.

Ferric iron is already oxidized, meaning it is solid rust particles suspended in the water. It makes water visibly orange or brown, and is common after main breaks or pressure changes in city water and in some well water. Columbus city water can pick up iron from aging cast iron mains, while wells across Central Ohio frequently carry significant iron from the local geology.

The EPA's secondary guideline for iron is 0.3 milligrams per liter (mg/L). Above that level, iron begins causing visible staining. Many Central Ohio wells test at 1 to 5 mg/L or higher. The staining starts before you ever see it in your glass, so by the time your water looks orange, the iron problem is already significant.

Orange or brown stains on fixtures

Iron deposits on fabric during the wash, leaving a rust-colored tint on whites and light colors that is often permanent. Bleach makes it worse, because chlorine bleach oxidizes dissolved iron into rust right in the machine drum.

They work on iron, but they also etch grout, dull fixture finishes, degrade caulk, and damage stone over time, so you pay for chemicals that do temporary work while slowly harming the surfaces you are trying to protect.
